段江华的油画让人过目不忘，这真的是如同他这个湖南人一样，只要你与他认识交往了，只要他进入了你的视线，我保准你记忆深刻。老段身材矮而不小，他自称自己身高一米五八，但他的体形肯定很有份量，他的头也大也很光亮，两只眼睛注视着你显得炯炯有神。说实话，在与他结识之前，我还真是没有接触过什么湖南的油画家，也不知道，当然，老岳要除外，老岳也就是岳敏君，他告诉我他也是湖南人，这是最近我才知道的事。也是在最近，今年的九月份，宋庄艺术节开幕的那天我才认识了段江华。

    那天在宋庄，杨卫策划了一个名为“落花时节又逢君”的联合画展，把我也掺和进去了。当天晚上，老段就把一些参展的画家邀请到了小堡村他的家，我记得在座的有我的老朋友画家何多苓、岳敏君和杨少斌，这有十几位画家和老伊灵。再加上又有人不时地进进出出，老段的家里很是热闹。老段的老婆吴涛亲自在厨房里掌勺，她做了一桌丰盛的湖南菜，比湖南人做得还地道。原来她是个北京人，不过她说她在湖南呆了也有十几年。

    在此这前我仅知道杨卫是来自湖南，但他是玩文章和为艺术家理论的。如今又有了段江华，他应该是我认识的湖南油画家第一人。当然还是要把老岳除外，因为当老岳说他也是湖南人时，我一是不太相信，二是没想到，想不到我所不知道的湖南人在油画上也是如此地厉害。那天在老段家我们酒喝得多，喝得也高兴，事后听说喝掉的茅台酒就有六瓶。我问老段都谁喝白酒了？他说你呀我呀老岳呀，主要就我们这几个，我心说我算是领教了你们这些湖南人。

    老段豪爽人很性情，当你环视他家的四壁，他的那些巨幅油画显得凝重而又大气。他的每幅作品似乎都充满着风云莫测的历史感，而且用色之厚更独具他画作的风格和魅力。借句老话说真是一方水土养一方人啊！我也觉得不同地域的画家就是有所不同，作品也一样，一目了然，难道不是吗？

The Painter Duan Jianghua

 

Duan Jianghua’s paintings are unforgettable, just like this Hunan native. If only you started to get to know him, if only he entered your sight, I guarantee you would have a deep impression. Duan is not tall but has a presence, he says he is one hundred and fifty-eight centimeters tall, but he has a rather considerable physique, his head is large and shiny, and his eyes are bright and piercing when he looks at you. To be honest, before I got to know him, I wasn’t really in touch with any Hunan painter, nor did I know any of them. Of course old Yue is an exception—old Yue is Yue Minjun— he told me he is also a Hunan native, which I just learned recently. Also not long ago, this September, I got to know Duan Jianghua at the opening of the Songzhuang Art Festival.

 

At Songzhuang that day, Yang Wei curated a group exhibition called “Meeting A Friend Again In the Fallen Petal Season”which also got me involved. That night, Duan invited some participating artists to his home in Xiaobao village. I remember there were my old friends painter He Duoling, Yue Minjun, Yang Shaobin, a dozen other painters and old Yi Ling,as well as people coming in and out. Duan’s home was rather busy. Duan’s wife Wu Tao was cooking in the kitchen, she made a sumptuous banquet of Hunan dishes that were more authentic than the ones cooked by a Hunan native. Actually she is a Beijinger, but she said she spent a dozen of years in Hunan.

 

Before that I only knew Yang Wei is from Hunan, but he is well known in the realm of writing and art theory. Now that I know Duan, he’s the first Hunan painter I know. Of course, Yue is an exception, because when Yue told me he was from Hunan, first I didn’t really believe him, and second it came as a surprise.It’s surprising the people from Hunan who I didn’t know are sp strong in terms of oil painting. We drank a lot of alcohol at Duan’s. We were having a great time; it was said that we drank six bottles of Moutai after fact. I asked Duan who drank the liquor, he said you, me, old Yue, mainly just several of us, I said to myself that I’d finally learned about these Hunan natives.

 

Old Duan is forthright and hot-blooded. When looking around his home, those enormous oil paintings of his appeared weighted and dignified. Every piece of his work seems to full of unpredictable historical sensations, and the thickness of the pigments makes the style and enchantment of his work stand out. Here I borrow an old saying: “Each place has its own way of nurturing its inhabitants!” I also feel like it’s different with the painters from different regions. The same applies to the works. It’s obvious, isn’t it?
